Town of Coventry The western and central portions of the town have remained very rural, with the only centers of population being located at Greene and Summit, both being established as railroad stations on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. The eastern section is one of the most rapidly growing residential communities in the State of Rhode Island. Coventry experienced dramatical changes during the 19th century. During the beginning of the century, the community's main focus was agriculture. The population of approximately 2,400 lived widely scattered on farms or in small villages. The growth of small textile mills built along the Pawtuxet River changed the community. Coventry, like many towns in Rhode Island, grew around its mills and continues to retain many of the old textile mill villages still known as Quidnick Village (the oldest), Anthony Village, Arkwright Village, Harris Village, Washington Village, Coventry Center Village, Summit Village, and Greene Village. The advent of the automobile in the 20th century brought an end of the railroad. Most of the old factories closed during this time. In the late 20th century, many new people moved to Coventry, most of them being from the Providence area. These new comers moved because of the large amount of land available to build on. The eastern part of the town became suburbanized. Coventry enjoys some of the best recreation facilities in Rhode Island. The town has youth sport leagues for football, basketball, baseball, and softball. The large multi-acre ponds offer freshwater fishing, wake-boarding, and other water sports. Hikers and nature lovers enjoy the number of trails of the 860 acre George B Parker Woodland. The Woodland has an old forest, brooks, several old farm sites, an old quarry, and mysterious stone cairns. Hikers and bikers may also take advantage of the Coventry Greenway, a 15 mile path from the Connecticut State line to the West Warwick town line. Coventry has a large number of old villages dating from the 19th century, they are:
